The search for the next United Nations secretary-general has introduced a new variable into diplomatic calculations: a former head of state from a central European power. US President Donald Trump is actively supporting Viktor Orban, the former prime minister of Hungary, as a potential candidate for the role. This push represents a shift from the traditional candidate pool, which has historically favored career diplomats and international bureaucrats.

Sources from three countries indicate that American officials have already contacted Orban about the position. While the former prime minister has expressed interest in the role, he has not yet made a final decision. He reportedly has reservations about entering the race, citing his identity as a nationalist politician. He also indicated he would not announce a bid unless he was confident of winning. Orban declined to comment publicly on the report.

Washington believes it can secure a joint candidate backed by the United States, Russia, and China. Officials from the US and another country stated that when these three powers align on a Security Council outcome, they can generally secure it. A US State Department official admitted the idea initially sounded far-fetched but estimated that eight of the council's 15 members would easily support Orban. The official projected he might reach as many as 10 votes. No public commitments from any country have been cited in the report.

The positions of the United Kingdom and France remain the key unknown. Both are permanent members with veto power. The report suggested they might not block a candidate supported by a council majority and the other three permanent members. However, neither London nor Paris has taken an official stance.

US officials reportedly described the desired candidate profile as 'someone like Orban,' a description that received agreement from Chinese and Russian counterparts. The State Department official labeled Orban the 'dream candidate for MAGA conservatives.' This assessment pointed to his opposition to large-scale immigration, liberal nongovernmental organizations, and established centers of power in Hungary's judiciary and media. In office, Orban clashed repeatedly with the European Union while building closer ties with China.

Trump endorsed Orban in Hungary's April elections, and Vice President JD Vance campaigned on his behalf. Another source familiar with the initiative said both Trump and Vance are expected to back Orban if he runs. Any official announcement from the US administration would reportedly wait until after the US midterm elections.

Critics of the potential candidacy note that Orban's ties to Moscow and Beijing, along with his record in Hungary, would likely face scrutiny. The report raised concerns that his appointment could turn the post into a defender of Russian President Vladimir Putin and other authoritarian leaders. An official from another country noted that the current field consists mostly of people from international bureaucracy, while Orban would bring the approach of a political leader used to wielding power.

Emirati diplomat Lana Nusseibeh is among the declared candidates. She entered the race last week and is reportedly gaining momentum. She is expected to answer questions on Tuesday, ahead of another Security Council straw poll on Wednesday. The informal vote is meant to gauge support as members work toward a consensus. It is unclear whether Orban's name will appear on the ballot, and more candidates could still enter. Antonio Guterres's term ends on December 31.
