Romanian President Nicușor Dan stated on X that Russia played a role in a sabotage attempt against a local weapons manufacturer.
Dan described the incident as a serious violation of national sovereignty and security. He said no foreign state has the right to act in such a manner on Romanian or European territory. The president identified the attack as part of a hybrid war waged by Moscow.
According to Dan, Russia has used various tools to undermine European democracies for years. He listed election influence, disinformation, information warfare, cyberattacks, and sabotage as components of this strategy.
The case involves an attempted arson attack at the Carfil weapons plant in Brașov on September 14. The Romanian Intelligence Service uncovered the network and reported that it was coordinated from Russia. Authorities suspect a Ukrainian citizen and two Belarusians of carrying out the act.
Dan praised the intelligence services for their effectiveness in exposing the group. He promised a firm response to prevent similar incidents and protect critical infrastructure. Romania will continue to cooperate closely with NATO allies and European Union partners.
Dan has previously noted a rise in Russian provocations within the European Union.
