Milwaukee scored eight runs with two outs in the eighth inning on Monday night, setting a World Series record against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.
The Brewers won the game 10-1 to take a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. This marks the first time in baseball history that a team has scored eight runs with two outs in a World Series inning.
The offensive explosion began with a two-run single by Brice Turang. That hit was the second of seven consecutive two-out hits that the Brewers recorded against Rays starter Freddy Peralta and relievers Cam Booser and Cole Sulser.
Garrett Mitchell followed Turang with an RBI single, and Cooper Pratt hit a two-run double. The Brewers scored their eighth run in that inning on an RBI double by Jackson Chourio. Chourio finished the night with four hits.
Rays shortstop Taylor Walls missed a key defensive play in the eighth inning. He attempted to stop Turang's sharp grounder, but the ball bounced off his glove into short center field. Walls described the moment as a knife in the chest.
I'd like to have that one back, Walls said. Those are plays that you'd like to make. He added that the missed chance was pretty much the turning point in the game.
Cam Booser, who relieved Peralta, spoke in the quiet clubhouse after the loss. Worst feeling in the world, feeling like you let your team down, Booser said.
Rays manager Kevin Cash acknowledged the historic deficit. He said the team has a seat at the table and must win Tuesday's game. Griffin Jax will start for Tampa Bay in Game 4. Jax said the team will try to forget Monday's loss and come back ready to fight.
Historical data shows that 21 of the previous 25 teams that fell behind 3-0 in a World Series were swept. The Boston Red Sox in the 2004 American League Championship Series are the only team to recover from a 3-0 deficit in any best-of-seven postseason matchup.
The Brewers had taken a 2-0 lead in the third inning on RBI singles by Christian Yelich and William Contreras. An infield single for Contreras in the fifth inning, resulting from a reversed forceout call by the replay operations center, helped set up the later scoring run.
